Growing up, I was the token Black kid in an all white school and neighborhood. One thing I repeatedly heard was that I "was so pretty for a Black girl." It took me until my late 20's to realize how back handed of a compliment that was.
When I saw this shirt on Own Your Blackness, I didn't hesitate to buy it immediately. It was suddenly like an "S" on my chest. Like a superhero shield, protecting me from back handed compliments. Don't let anyone justify why you're only pretty enough, smart enough, good enough.
I'm pretty, period. If you have to add a disclaimer to a "compliment," keep it to yourself. My self confidence will suffice. Trust.
