We all know that the “L Word” is “love,” but I want to talk about what the “L Word” is, as far as business is concerned. When it comes to business, the “L Word” is leverage. Many people create amazing content and they’re really smart, but they’re not making money from their content because they don’t have leverage. What exactly is leverage? It’s your business’ advantage. In other words, it’s making the MOST of the value you provide to your audience.
Build Limitless Value
Within the last year, I’ve provided a lot of free content, so people ask me, “Why are you giving this out for free?” Listen, as long as I always give more than I take, I’ll always have leverage, and I’ll never be broke. In business, as long as you give more than you take, you’ll always have the upper hand.
I’m constantly figuring out how to get better, and I’m constantly studying my craft. I’m never going to run out of value because I’ll always give more than I take—and I give without a motive. There are people who always watch my Periscope videos, read my blog content, listen to my podcasts, and take my free email course, but they’ve never bought any of my products. I treat them just as well as the people who invest in my paid products.
Give 3X More Than You Take
At the end of the day, I’m a businesswoman. Do I sell products that I want you to buy? Absolutely. But here’s the thing, every time I ask my audience for something, I give them 3x as much free value or more.
GIVE - GIVE - GIVE - TAKE is your “L word” formula for success in business.
There’s nothing wrong with asking people to buy, but your “ask” will always be stronger with leverage. If you’re in business and you don’t understand that selling to people is your business, then you’re not really interested in doing business. You also have to understand that selling is just one facet of a successful business.
Make Your Value Undeniable
When you repeatedly provide value for free, people don’t question the value of your paid products—they know they’re going to get their money’s worth because of what you give for free. And guess what? The more free value I give to my audience, the better my relationships with brands become. It’s your responsibility to build your leverage so your audience and brands see your value and so you can get a direct return on your leverage.
A lot of people are stingy with their value. They say things like, “Well, I don’t want to give this content for free because it’s so good.” Why would you not want to share something that’s incredibly helpful to your audience? And why would you think that you only have a handful of good ideas to offer? You have to rid yourself of this mentality because you’re selling yourself short.
I always tell my audience the “what and why” for free. Always. I only charge to show you how to do something because many people need step-by-step guidance on how to take the next step, and the “how” is really crucial.
If you’re interested in making six figures, figure out what your leverage is. Get clear on what’s valuable to your audience and stop thinking that you need to be validated before you give value. Your value is what validates you.
The long and the short of it:
- In business, you have to give to be successful—and you have to give repeatedly.
When you provide free, useful content more than you ask for your audience’s coins, people are more likely to invest in your paid products.
Figure out how to successfully leverage your value, and you’ll never worry about your financial well-being.
